Sublette County Public Land Use Policy Process
A guiding document for Sublette County's official policies on public lands management within the county.

Introduction

With 80 percent of Sublette County's nearly 5,000 square miles being public land, what happens on these lands has significant impacts on residents of the county.

The Sublette County Commission has decided to begin the process of developing a "public lands policy" to serve as the guiding document laying out the county's official policies on public lands management within the county.

Management of public lands, including lands administered by the USDI Bureau of Land Management and the USDA Forest Service, is governed by a system of laws and regulations. Portions of these laws and regulations also provide for involvement of local governments in the planning and decision-making processes. Federal land use plans are to be consistent with local land use plans, ordinances and policy.

The commission agreed in mid-January 2008 to begin the process of developing this policy for public lands within Sublette County. Federal land managers will then be able to examine the county's policies to learn the county's expectations for management of federal lands within the county's borders. The commission expects federal land managers to ensure consistency with the county's policy as they move forward with management activities and decision-making.

What will be included?

This process will include the various resources and uses of public lands in the county - from air, land and water, to endangered species, wilderness designations and off-highway vehicle use.

What this policy is not:

• This policy is not a product of the Sublctte County Planning and Zoning Commission, nor is it part of the County Comprehensive Plan. Please don't contact the P&Z office for information or with questions.

• The Public Land Use Policy does not apply to private property - only to public land.

• This policy is not intended as a planning document laying out certain management actions for specific parcels of public land. Instead, this policy provides an overall policy framework for public lands within the county.
