Green River Rondy this weekend!
Calcutta on Friday, 8 pm, Bottoms Up
December 29, 2005

The Green River Rondy Sled Dog Race will bring in the New Year this weekend! The last Green River Rondy was held in 2001. The race is back for a special 2006 celebration held on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. The course is on Bridger-Teton National Forest, partly riding on the Continental Divide Snowmobile Trail on the road to Green River Lakes. Races will be held on Saturday and Sunday, with the times combined to determine the overall winner.

There will be a Calcutta on Friday, December 30, at 8 pm at Bottoms Up Brewery in Pinedale to auction off the mushers. Andy Nelson, Cowboy DJ of the Year, will be the auctioneer. Proceeds will benefit the Children's Discovery Center in Pinedale.

While town and the lower elevations saw rain and a bit of a scare Wednesday afternoon, the system brought fresh powder to the Upper Green and higher elevations. Kendall Ranger station SNOTEL, along the sled dog race path, reported 6" of fresh snow overnight with this storm. Race organizers checked out the course and said it looks great!

Mushers leave the Start Line in the Upper Green at 8 am both mornings. Spectators are welcome and encouraged to carpool. Best viewing will be between 8 am and noon Saturday and Sunday. Dress warm. Restrooms are located at the parking area. The Place, located a couple of miles down the road, has a restaurant for food services.

While maintaining the traditional 6-dog class of past Rondys, a 12-dog class has now been added to the roster, with both courses running over and along the scenic Upper Green River Valley. There is a $6,000 guaranteed purse.

In honor of the western heritage and pride of Sublette County, this year's Rondy will use local ranchers' livestock brands to replace numbers on the musher's race bibs.

Continental Divide Trail Snowmobilers:
Just a word to give you a heads up that due to the sled dog race, the Upper Green parking area at the Forest boundary will used by sled dog racers and dog teams, as well as spectators. Parking and turn-around space may be limited for vehicles and snowmobile trailers for those wanting to sled the Continental Divide Trail in the Upper Green this weekend. Snowmobilers are welcome, but please use caution and go slow when traveling near dog sled teams that will also be sharing the trail both Saturday and Sunday mornings. We hear the snow is also great up Horse Creek in the Wyoming Range...!
