Gas prices on the rise here too
But we're cheap compared to other places

Sublette County broke the $3 level again this week for diesel gas prices. Two of three gas stations in Pinedale are now over the $3/gallon mark, as diesel prices went up between $.15-.20 cents a gallon from last week to this. Diesel in Big Piney-Marbleton hovers about .05 cents a gallon cheaper than Pinedale. Prices for regular unleaded also went up comparably across the county.

The price jump might make people cringe, but our price at the pump is actually significantly lower than many other are currently paying. According to the gasbuddy.com website, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Utah have the lowest prices for gas in the United States, averaging between $2.37 and $2.76 per gallon. Pinedale’s regular unleaded gas averaged $2.71/gallon this week and south county averaged $2.61/gallon. California stations are already paying over $3/gallon for regular unleaded. Across the nation as a whole, regular unleaded averaged $2.90/gallon as of today.

According to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report, states with regular unleaded gas prices over $3/gallon now are California, Connecticut, Hawaii, New York and District of Columbia. Most states are already seeing premium unleaded at over $3/gallon, with Wyoming being one of the few states still under the $3 mark for the state-wide average.

On Monday, top congressional Republicans urged President Bush to investigate whether market manipulation has played a role in soaring gasoline prices. According to a story on marketwatch.com, “lawmakers asked the president to order the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission to "investigate any potential collusion, price-fixing or gouging in the sale or distribution of gasoline, petroleum distillates or ethanol in wholesale and retail markets." Large oil companies are reporting record earnings. Some lawmakers are calling for a “windfall tax” on record oil profits. Prices are expected to continue to rise as the summer driving season approaches.
