Purdy Fire Update: August 27
20,900 acre fire burning near Union Pass
August 27, 2006

The Purdy fire is burning west of Union Pass, partly on the Bridger-Teton and partly on the Shoshone National Forest. As of Sunday morning, it was reported to be 20,900 acres in size and 40% contained.

There are currently 300 structures threatened by this fire on the Dubois side of the mountain. There are 596 people assigned to this fire, including 13 crews, 27 engines, 6 helicopters, 5 water tenders, 5 dozers and overhead personnel.

Crews made good progress on containing the fire over the weekend thanks to cooler and moister weather Friday and Saturday. Crews will continue to construct direct hand line mopping up and trying to hold the fire where it is.

CLOSURE: The Union Pass Road (Shoshone Forest Road #263) is closed from the Forest boundary just past Line Shack, then southwest over Union Pass. On the Bridger-Teton NF, the road becomes Forest Road #600 and is closed to where it intersects with the junction of Park Creek Meadows Road #627.

Governor Dave Freudenthal flew over the Purdy fire on Friday morning in a helicopter to access the fire situation.
