(Pinedale) - This month, the Forest Service partnered with the Sage and Snow Garden Club and visited the Pinedale Elementary School to promote the Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl 2007 Poster Contest. Each year first through fifth graders from around the country participate in a poster contest to promote natural resource issues. This year the focus of the contest was either Smokey Bear’s message, “Only you can prevent wildfires” or Woodsy Owl’s, “Lend a Hand, Care for the Land.”

Forest Service employees Meredith Malek, Visitor Information Assistant, and Nan Stinson, Fire Information and Education Specialist, along with Bev Sharp from the Sage and Snow Garden Club, educated the first, third and fourth-grade classes about Woodsy Owl and his four R’s: reduce, reuse, recycle and rot.

After a short discussion, each class competed in Woodsy’s, “Fly, Woodsy, Fly,” life-sized board game. The children answered questions relating to ways they could reduce the amount of stuff they use everyday, reusing the same things more than once, recycling something old and turning it into something new, and rot, turning leftover fruits and vegetables into compost.

In 2006, Cassidy Mitchelson, from Pinedale Elementary, won fourth place in the nation with an honorable mention ribbon for her poster of Smokey Bear!

This year, the Forest Service and Garden Club will be having a local contest along with sending all entries to the national level. All winners at the local and national level will be announced in April, 2007, in conjunction with Earth Day.

We wish all the elementary students good luck in the contest. Happy drawing! For more information, please contact the Pinedale Ranger District at (307) 367-4326 or (307) 367-5700.
