(Pinedale) - Bridger-Teton National Forest employees visited elementary students in Sublette and Lincoln County schools this past week.

Meredith Malek, Information Assistant from the Pinedale Ranger District, and Nan Stinson, Fire Education/Prevention Specialist from the Big Piney Ranger District, taught the children about the fire triangle and its role in fire prevention and safety, then performed an experiment that tested the fire triangle. Students played a fun game of Wildfire Tag, and came up with a silly Mad Lib fire story.

The Bridger-Teton N.F. and the Sage and Snow Garden Club use the education programs to promote the Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl 2008 Poster Contest. Each year the USDA Forest Service and the National Garden Clubs Inc., sponsors the Smokey Bear Poster Contest every year to promote wildfire prevention education and conservation, emphasizing everyone’s role of self-responsibility for our environment.

The poster contest is open to students from 1st to 5th grade. This year the focus of the contest is either Smokey Bear’s message “Only you can prevent wildfires” or Woodsy Owl’s “Lend a Hand, Care for the Land.”

Approximately 376 students from Pinedale, Big Piney, and La Barge Elementary schools received packets of fire education materials and a visit from Smokey Bear. For more information on the poster contest visit www.symbols.gov/postercontest.
