The Wildlife Conservation Society continues in its long-term study of pronghorn antelope in the Yellowstone region.

Perhaps you’ve seen people with antennas out walking around on public lands this week and you’ve wondered what they were doing.

WCS’s Leigh Work is one of four people out scouring the sagebrush this week searching for GPS collars. The collars were placed on 50 pronghorn last winter and were set to release during the last week of October/first few days of November. Researchers then use telemetry to find the collars after they have dropped to the ground. Data can then be retrieved from the devices.

WCS has just completed the second year report of a five-year study of pronghorn, being undertaken with funding from Shell Exploration and Production Company. The project is designed to help in understanding the potential for winter-related effects of gas field development in the region.
