The Wyoming Main Street Program and the Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office will sponsor Wyoming’s first statewide historic preservation conference, entitled “Preserve Wyoming 2008: Main Street and Beyond,” May 14-16 at the Plains Hotel in Cheyenne.

The conference is aimed at individuals interested in historic preservation; representatives of local government and downtown organizations; local historical societies, and Main Street programs. The conference will feature 11 educational sessions on historic preservation techniques, success stories and strategies, including: “The Dollars and Sense of Preservation,” “Heritage Tourism,” “Understanding the National Register of Historic Places,” and sessions on how to fund historic preservation projects.

Dan Carmody of Carmody Consulting in Fort Wayne, IN will be the keynote speaker of the conference, offering his presentation, “Sustainable, Viable and Equitable: Building the Case for Greater Density on Main Street.” John Nau, Chairman of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, and Patrick Overton, Director of the Front Porch Institute of Oregon, will also be featured speakers at the conference.

An awards banquet to honor individuals and organizations involved with outstanding preservation projects in their communities will be held Thursday, May 15.

Registration for all three days of the conference is $100 and includes a reception on Wednesday evening, all meals on Thursday and breakfast and lunch on Friday. There is a $10 discount for members of Certified Local Government programs or a local Main Street program. Registration for Thursday’s sessions (not including the awards banquet) is $50.
