Public Workshops solicit involvement in WLCI habitat projects
by Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative
October 21, 2008

The Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative (WLCI) will hold a series of workshops in late-October to engage the public in development of habitat enhancement projects in Southwest Wyoming.

The meetings will be held:

Friday, October 24: Pinedale, Wyoming, 1:00 p.m. in the Pinedale Library
Tuesday, October 28: Lyman, Wyoming, 10:00 a.m. in the Lyman Town Hall
Friday, October 30: Carbon County, location to be announced on the website www.wlci.gov.

All members of the public are invited to discuss ongoing projects and proposed projects for completion in 2010.

"It is incredibly important for us to engage the public to identify the important habitat issues of the area," said WLCI coordinator Renee Dana. "The success of the initiative hinges on the creation of long-term partnerships with local members of the public to best reach the goals of both the WLCI and citizens of the area."

Dozens of projects for 2009 were identified in similar workshops held last year. Workshop participants will also identify areas where habitat can be enhanced and will begin development of projects for completion in 2010. If you have a project idea you would like to submit, please prepare a short presentation with objectives and maps, if necessary and contact Brandon Hoffner at 307-352-0397. Six projects were completed in 2007, and 25 are currently in progress.

The WLCI is a long-term science-based effort to assess and enhance aquatic and terrestrial habitats at a landscape scale in Southwest Wyoming, while facilitating responsible development.

Formal WLCI members include the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), U.S.D.A. Forest Service, Wyoming Game and Fish Department, Wyoming Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Land Management, County Commissioners and Conservation Districts.

Funding set aside for WLCI efforts in 2008 included $1.3 million for BLM, $1.5 million for USGS and $1.5 million for USFWS. For more information on the efforts of the WLCI, visit www.wlci.gov.
