Arnold Brokling took this photo of the lights from drilling rigs on the south end of the Pinedale Anticline reflecting in the night sky on Monday, December 14th. According to Arnie’s friend, Dave Bell, "They are frozen ice crystals suspended in the cold air and when the lights from the rigs or other bright locations pass through them, they cause a vertical pillar effect. It is quite rare and just the right atmospheric conditions are needed--generally when a weather system is moving out, a cold system is moving in and the cold system is milking the moisture out of the air--causing ice crystals to float or be suspended as the weather condition changes."
