Ban on dihydrogen monoxide
'Junk Science'
by Pinedale Online!
Original post March 30, 2010 | Updated December 10, 2010

John Stossel, host of "Stossel" on the Fox Business Network, claims that people are ignorant about science. So much so, he argues, that it is easy for politicians to scare them into supporting regulations, sometimes absurd ones.

In a show on Thursday, April 1st, he will discuss "junk science." Why do we so readily believe and are we scientifically illiterate? Will nuclear power really solve our energy "crisis" and make the US "energy independent?" What about oil, natural gas, solar and wind energy options and costs? What are some of the facts behind the effectiveness of bans on plastic bags and incandescent light bulbs?

With Sublette County having a significant amount of drilling activity to develop natural gas and oil fields, is it possible there is some "junk science" in the mix of arguments used to sway public opinion pro or con for energy development in our own back yard?

To showcase his point for the show, Stossel went to Times Square in New York City and asked people if they would support a petition demanding a ban on "dihydrogen monoxide," explaining it was a colorless, odorless chemical that kills thousands. Most of the people asked signed the petition.

Dihydrogen monoxide is H20.

The signers were embarrassed to learn they had eagerly endorsed a ban on water.

John F. Stossel is an American consumer reporter, investigative journalist, author, libertarian columnist, and former co-anchor for the ABC News show 20/20. He worked on ABC News as consumer editor and reporter on Good Morning America. He has written two books, "Give Me a Break" and "Myths, Lies, and Downright Stupidity".

Stossel’s program airs Thursday, April 1st at 8:00pm & 11:00pm ET. It re-airs on Friday, April 2 at 10:00 pm ET, Saturday at 7:00 pm ET, and Sunday at 10:00pm ET.
