Grazing buy outs for wild horses?

The Bureau of Land Management, under the direction of Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, has released a proposal for a new future for wild horse and burro management. Important new actions in the proposal include:

• Enter into agreements with livestock operators to trade livestock use areas for wild horse and burro use.

• Voluntary relinquishment of livestock grazing permits.

• Third-party purchase of grazing permits for use by wild horses and burros.

• Increase the number of wild horse preserves, through long-term holding contracts, acquisition of non-federal land, establishment of preserves on other federal agency lands, and reimburse private land owners for horse care under USDA conservation programs such as the Grassland Reserve Program.

The proposal also considers a variety of actions from reintroducing wild horses into areas they don’t currently exist, to designation of certain herds as "treasured herds" with special protections. Some actions, including euthanasia, are off the table and will not be considered, according to the BLM.

Public comments on the proposal must be submitted by Aug. 3. For more information, click on the link below.
