The House Senate Corporations Committees met in the Pinedale Library on Wednesday, May 25th to take public comment on the upcoming legislative Redistricting for Wyoming. House Committee Chairman Pete Illoway of Cheyenne and Senate Chairman Cale Case ran the hearing.

A number of other legislators were on hand, including State Senator Dan Dockstader and Sublette County Commissioner Andy Nelson, although not formally part of the Committee. Also attending was Sublette County Republican Chairman Walt Bousman.

Chairman Illoway conducted the meeting. The Legislative Service Office presented a slide show and discussed the rationale and methodology for how the new districts would be selected.

Chairman Illoway talked briefly about the scheduled committee travels and then opened for public comments.

Sublette County Clerk, Mary Lankford, spoke about Sublette County’s desire to have its own representative without any carve outs into other districts and counties. One proposal was to give Teton County control of House District 22 including a small portion of Sublette in it.

Sublette County has grown from a population of 5,920 in 2000 to 10,247 in 2010. The rough population of any given House District needs to be about 9,394. A part of Sublette County will likely be placed in another district than the bulk.

Few comments were made by the public. Louise Winney, a teacher at Pinedale High and Middle Schools, resident of Bondurant, spoke to the committee about the district, noting that she is a resident of Sublette County working in Sublette County and the possibility of being put in a district that was largely of another county did not seem right to her.

The meeting ended after only an hour and fifteen minutes.
