Three waters scheduled for chemical treatment
Public meeting in Pinedale June 7 and Farson June 8
by Wyoming Game & Fish Department
June 6, 2011

The Wyoming Game & Fish Department will be chemically treating Midland Draw (Sculpin Creek), Arambel Slough (Long Draw Creek) and Meeks Lake in July and August to remove several undesirable fish species.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department will be holding two public meetings to discuss and hear public questions and comments on the three chemical treatments. Public meetings will be held at 7:00 pm on June 7, 2011 at the Pinedale G&F Regional Office and at 7:00 pm on June 8, 2011 at the Farson Eden School Library.

Green River Fisheries Supervisor Robb Keith says the treatments are targeting white and longnose suckers. "G&F personnel will apply rotenone, a chemical that is toxic to gilled animals such as fish, but is not harmful to humans, livestock or other wildlife at the concentrations used to kill fish," says Keith. "These treatments are the first in a series of treatments designed to rehabilitate three native non-game species: bluehead suckers, flannelmouth suckers and roundtail chubs."

Midland Draw, a tributary to the Big Sandy River, contains non-native white suckers, while Meeks Lake holds a population of non-native longnose suckers in the headwaters of the Big Sandy River. Arambel Slough is a tributary to Little Sandy Creek, which also holds non-native white suckers. Biologists assert non-native suckers are particularly dangerous to native suckers because they readily hybridize with them. "Bluehead suckers, flannelmouth suckers and roundtail chub historically occupied most of the upper Green River watershed in Wyoming," Keith says. The State of Wyoming supports the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Anyone requiring auxiliary aids, regarding this Public Notice, should contact the Green River Game and Fish Office at 307-875-3223. Every effort will be made for reasonable accommodations.
