Boy Scout Troop 1, chartered by the Scouting Parents of Pinedale, and meets at the Pinedale Bible Church, has continued its cold-weather camping tradition over the last few months. Led by Patrol Leaders TJ Steele and Matt Piros, and scoutmasters Robert Lenz, Josh Adams, Dean Loftus, Don Moritsch and Tony Steele, the troop is continuing to learn how to camp and survive (with a smile) in cold and snowy conditions.

CAMPING UPDATES
On February10-12, the troop drove into Owl's Nest along the Green River. The troop entered the Wyoming Trails District Winter Derby/Klondike competition weekend. Troop 1 scouts finished in the top three in the actual Klondike race and took home a Presidents Ribbon for being ranked in the top 3 of all of the troops in attendance. The scouts camped Friday through Sunday gaining the nights of camping necessary to earn rank requirements, merit badges or nights for the Order of the Arrow organization.

On January 13-14, the troop drove to the Uinta Co Fairgrounds for the Annual Order of the Arrow campout in Evanston, WY. The non-Order of the Arrow scouts toured the OA events, visited the restored rail depot and went to Chinese historical museum. The scouts camped Friday night and survived very cold conditions.

In October 2011, the troop road tripped to Craters of the Moon National Monument. Cooper Eaton and his dad of Troop18 joined us for this exciting adventure. The troop climbed down into all of the lava tubes we were allowed to as we went "caving". The temperature at night was also very cold so the boys learned how to get the dished washed before frost bite sat in. All of the adults were able to fit through most of the caves and we left no one behind. It was a great trip to see the neat volcanic landscapes of Arco, Idaho.

On September 23-25, 2011 the troop headed to the Wyoming Trails Fall Encampment at FMC Park in Green River. The troop worked on the Orienteering Merit Badge, canoed the Green River and fellowshipped with fellow Rock Springs and Green River Boy Scout troops.

In August 2011, the troop road tripped to Montpelier, Idaho to attend Boy Scout Camp Bartlett for a whole week of camp. The 11 boys who went brought home almost 60 merit badges as they worked from 5:30 AM (to get to the shooting ranges) to 11 PM at night working on merit badge requirements. Troop 1 won an "Honors Troop" medal for outstanding service and activity for the week. The troop had a great showing in the John Colter run and many of the boys made the 6 AM Polar Bear event in the lake. Two of the scouts and one of the leaders earned the 1 Mile Swim patch during the week as well.

UPCOMING CAMPS
Troop 1 will be camping at Camp "Loftus/Upper Green River" in March, Owl’s Nest in April, attending the Scout a Rama in Green River in May and attending a week-long camp in Idaho for June.

RANK/MERIT BADGE UPDATES
Troop 1 would like to thank several of Pinedale finest for their help with the lads as they have needed help on rank requirements and merit badges. I would like to thank Janet Montgomery and the staff at BOCES who have offered several Merit Badge (MB) opportunities including pottery, aviation and chess. Many thanks go to Lat Straley who spent two days teaching the Snow Sports MB, Bubba Haley who spoke about wildlife, Office Kaumo and the Dare Program, Wil Gay who taught the 1st Aid MB and Principal Turcato has spoken about citizen’s rights and his expectations. I would also like to thank Sheriff Dave Lankford who is planning to speak about rights and responsibilities as well and is making the detention facility available to teach the Fingerprinting MB. I would like to thank the ladies at Heritage Quilt and The Stitching Post who have helped design, create and fabricate troop 1’s distinctive neckerchiefs and patrol flags. I am grateful that I live and work in a community which has so many quality adults who are willing to take time to teach and work with youth. We also want to thank the Board of Elders and Pastor Jim Silvey at Pinedale Bible Church who have given us a place to meet for the past 2 years. Thank you Pinedale!

Troop 1 is a traditional, youth-led scouting program for boys aged 11 to 17. In addition to a 10 to 12-month camping & outdoor program, the troop offers leadership and character development, and is a fully-uniformed unit. Anyone interested in the program offered by Troop 1 or the BSA is encouraged to call Troop 1 Scoutmasters Robert Lenz, Josh Adams, Dean Loftus, Tony Steele or Don Moritsch in Pinedale.
