Wyoming Legislature update
by Albert Sommers, Representative House District #20
January 4, 2015

Hello Sublette County, this is Albert Sommers. The 63rd Legislature will convene at noon on Tuesday, January 13, when all legislators will take the oath of office. The session is scheduled to end on March 11th. A joint Session of the House and Senate will meet in the House Chamber at 10:00 a.m. on January 14 to hear Governor Matt Mead give his State of the State address, to be followed by Chief Justice E. James Burke who will deliver the State of the Judiciary. The legislature will hit the ground running, and begin to sift through the many bills that will be brought to this year’s session. The last I heard, there were over 300 bills being drafted for consideration, and I am sure that number will climb. The last day for bills to be submitted for introduction is February 2 for House bills.

Some of the more interesting debates will include bills dealing with Medicaid Expansion, Marijuana possession, increasing the minimum wage, removing the restrictions on the National Science Standards, and a constitutional amendment to eliminate the elected Superintendent of Public Instruction position. Many other bills of interest will pop up in the next few weeks.

I will be working on my Class A&B drivers’ license bill, a bill to clarify the education standard setting process, and a bill to protect survey monuments from destruction. If you have any questions or comments contact me at
