Sandpoint Fire burning 22 miles northeast of Boulder, Wyoming
by Bridger-Teton National Forest
September 1, 2015

PINEDALE - The Sandpoint Fire is located on the Pinedale Ranger District of the Bridger-Teton National Forest, approximately 22 miles northeast of Boulder, Wyoming. This fire is deep within the Bridger Wilderness of the Wind River Range, approximately eight air miles northeast of the Scab Creek Trailhead, northeast of Sandpoint Lake.

The fire was reported by a member of the public on Saturday, August 22, and confirmed by the Forest Service on Tuesday, August 25. The fire was approximately 2 to 3 acres in size and creeping and smoldering in mixed conifer and open alpine meadows when detected on August 25. The cause of the fire is unknown. This fire is located east of the Continental Divide Trail/Fremont Trail #096 and north of the Middle Fork Lake Trail #157. No trails have been closed at this time. Visitors should avoid camping in this area and use caution when traveling near this area

Fire Danger has been elevated to "High" for the Teton Interagency Area, including the Pinedale Ranger District, and the potential for fire activity is anticipated to increase due to drying vegetation combined with higher temperatures, low humidity and brisk afternoon winds.

Firefighter resources are currently spread very thin across the nation, and this is no exception on the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Due to its remote location, lack of available firefighting resources, and late season at this high elevation, the Sandpoint Fire will be monitored by Fire and Wilderness personnel, while keeping public and firefighter safety as the primary objective throughout the duration of this incident.

Information regarding fire activity and trail closures (if determined to be needed) for the Sandpoint Fire is available at the Pinedale Ranger District at 307-367-4326 and at www.tetonfires.com.
