Rocky Mountain Power updates plan to provide energy in the future
Market conditions indicate it is more economical to close Unit 3 of the Naughton coal-fueled plant in Wyoming than convert to natural gas
by Rocky Mountain Power media release
March 31, 2016

Rocky Mountain Power, a division of PacifiCorp, filed its Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) update with the public utility commissions of the states it serves. The IRP is the company's best current view of what resources, such as power generation plants, it will need to meet the future power needs of its customers. A full IRP is developed every two years and an update is filed in the off years.

"One of the ways we work to keep costs low for our customers is by rigorously reviewing all prudent options to meet future customers need for power," said Rick Link, director of origination at PacifiCorp. "These filings with the public utility commissions of the states we serve demonstrate our commitment to meeting our obligations to customers and regulators, now and in the years to come."

The IRP and updates are based on current information and are subject to change.

Based on new analysis for this update:

It is more economical under current market conditions to close Unit 3 of the Naughton coal-fueled plant in Wyoming rather than to convert it to natural gas as was previously planned. However, the company will continue to review alternatives for Naughton Unit 3 through its current compliance deadline at the end of 2017.

Energy efficiency remains a key for managing future energy demands. About 87 percent of expected growth in power usage will be met by customers using electricity more efficiently.

To help the company remain prepared to support its states’ compliance with potential greenhouse gas regulations, the update addresses the Clean Power Plan. The plan is currently held up by litigation but the company is not a party.
