Game and Fish to discuss Pinedale fisheries May 18

Pinedale fish managers for the Wyoming Game and Fish Department are inviting anglers to join them for an evening meeting to discuss the proposed 2017 fishing regulation changes, along with other regional fisheries topics. The meeting will held Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at the Wyoming Game and Fish Department Regional Office, starting at 6 p.m.

For the Pinedale area, there are changes being proposed for Middle Piney Lake and Soda Lake. Fish netting data collected during recent assessments indicates that the lake trout population in Middle Piney Lake could support additional harvest. "Given the low angling pressure and limited harvest of lake trout, there is no biological need for the restrictive harvest regulation currently in place," said Pinedale Fisheries Biologist Darren Rhea. "We are proposing to change the lake trout limit to the statewide regulation of six fish per day with no more than one exceeding 24 inches in length.

For Soda Lake, starting in 2017, managers are proposing to change the opening date from May 10 to May 1, which would coincide with the opening date for public access to the Soda Lake Wildlife Habitat Management Area. Anglers could also see an extended fishing season there as managers are proposing a new closing date of November 15 rather than the current October 1. "Since Wyoming Game and Fish Department is not longer spawning fish at Soda Lake, there is no need for an October 1 closure," said Hilda Sexauer, Pinedale Region Fish Supervisor.

Biologists will also be sharing information regarding Soda Lake, Dollar Lake and other waters in the region. "The purpose of this meeting is to just have an open discussion with those that use the fisheries resource we manage, hear their concerns, inform them on what we have been doing and possible future plans for their local rivers and lakes," said Sexauer.

The Game and Fish supports the Americans with Disabilities Act. Every effort will be made for reasonable accommodations by contacting the Pinedale Game and Fish office at 307-367-4353.
